When Rest Becomes Another Thing to Get Right
When Rest Becomes Another Thing to Get Right
By Mary Parker, LPC-S, Clinical Director, Infinite Potential
Letting a break be a break
A quiet hour opens up, and you immediately try to use it well. Should you meditate, walk, read, stretch, or catch up on sleep? The search for the most effective rest can become another task. You finish the break feeling that you did not do enough with it.
Start with a smaller question: What would make the next ten minutes less demanding? The answer may be silence, company, movement, or doing nothing structured. Notice whether you are choosing an activity because it feels supportive or because you believe you must prove the break was productive.
Try one short interval without evaluating the result. You do not have to feel transformed afterward. Rest can create a little space while other pressures remain. If stillness feels uncomfortable, explore the thoughts that appear instead of forcing yourself into a practice that does not fit.
Counseling can help with guilt about pausing and the belief that worth depends on constant output. We can also consider workload, sleep, and relationships. A break cannot repair an unsustainable schedule by itself, but it does not need to become another demand.
