Creating an Autism-Friendly Home

February 16, 2025

Autism spectrum disorder (commonly referred to simply as “autism”) is a neurological and developmental disorder that can affect how someone learns, communicates, behaves, and interacts with others. If you have a family member who has autism, you may be looking for ways to make them feel more comfortable in your house. Here are some helpful tips for how to create an autism-friendly home:

  • Decorate strategically. Individuals with autism are often especially sensitive to color, and some shades can produce certain emotions. For example, blues and greens tend to have a calming effect, so you may want to consider incorporating those colors into bedrooms and study areas. Orange is more stimulating, making it a great choice for kitchens and rooms where your family will be spending time together.
  • Stock up on favorites. If your autistic family member resists trying new foods, be sure to always keep a few of their favorite items on hand. While you can still encourage them to try eating something new, they’ll feel more comfortable knowing that there’s always something available that they definitely like.
  • Be consistent. People with autism tend to thrive on structure, so develop a daily routine and stick to it. For example, have your child take a shower or bath, brush their teeth, and read a bedtime story at approximately the same time each night. And because autistic individuals often respond well to visual prompts, you may want to lay out those tasks in a schedule or calendar using pictures.
